st Corinthians 14:1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy…
Vs39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues.
Being filled with the spirit often happens as we speak with tongues. Some have misquoted the epistles to say we can’t initiate prophecy or prophesying.
2nd Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
If it were to be interpreted to mean we can’t desire to prophesy and do so, it will contradict what Peter himself taught earlier in his epistle.
1st Peter 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:
The word ‘prophecy’ in 2nd Peter 1 above refers to Old Testament books. This isn’t prophesying today. Hence, the use of the phrase ‘in old time’. 1st Peter 1:10 clarifies what he meant, it was what the prophets said about Christ.
In Luke 24:25-27 Jesus clearly, was referring to the Old Testament and not the utterance gifts today.
We desire to and do prophesy. This was the crux of Joel’s prophecy.
Acts 2:17-18 means it becomes our initiative. It should be common in our midst.
Acts 21:4 these were disciples (students). They spoke by the spirit via tongues and interpretation of tongues(prophesying). They did not to be prophets to function like this.
In Acts 21:9, all of Philip’s daughters spoke by the spirit.
The whole church can prophesy (1st Corinthians 14:24, 31); it is part and parcel of Christian meetings. All member of a local assembly should prophesy and can prophesy one by one.
1st Corinthians 11:4 Every man praying or
prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. Vs 5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
There is no form of gender discrimination to speaking with tongues/prophesying as both male and female can function in this. Prophecy in the new covenant is tongues plus interpretation. It is our birth right and functional ability in Christ. It is a gift from God found in our spirit.
Practical: minister to at least in person today by tongues and interpretation.
