David by many of the Psalms he wrote made us aware that he was a man who faced many challenges during his lifetime. He stands-out as the greatest king Israel had. However, his dealings with God are those things which should serve to comfort and guide us, especially when in the moments of despair, hopelessness and great trouble.
In Psalms 27, David reveals to us a dimension of his relationship with God that serves to keep him always safe ‘in the time of trouble’ – troubles that was surely served to come upon his heart and weaken it.
_“For in the time of trouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; in the secret place of His tabernacle He shall hide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.”_ Psa 27:5
But towards the end of the Psalm he tells us that he was not far from losing heart. Indeed, had he not had hope and faith in God and in His goodness, it is certain that he would have lost heart.
_“I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.”_ Psa 27:13
That belief – that hope, faith and trust – in God is a result of one’s relationship and fellowship with God. But can one have fellowship with God when one has no active ‘prayer life’?
David doesn’t leave the matter to our conjecture or assumptions. He makes us aware of what caused him not to lose heart, and made his faith and hope in God not to wane. It is that which caused his heart to be strengthened instead. And he lays emphasis on that truth through repetition; which is to wait on the Lord. And who can truly wait on the Lord without praying?
“Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!” Psa 27:14
