Laptop is a computer but a small personal computer with a clamshell form factor. It has a thin screen in the upper lid and a keyboard on the lower lid.
Being a clamshell form factor it can be opened to view the screen and keyboard or it can be shut and put in a thin bag and can be carried about especially when travelling.
The name laptop was given to this clamshell form factor as it was intended to be used on the lap onlike desktop computers that needs a desk because of the different external devices that make it up.
Although laptops are portable they can do everything a desktop computers can do things like playing music because it has built in speakers, it has a pointing device like a mouse, it can also be used to play games and watch movies because it has a display screen in it's casing, laptops can also be used to surf the web and download web contents like music,apps, movies and other web content you can think of, also it features an optical disk drive for the use of compact disk whether for reading or writing files to the disk.
Unlike desktops laptops can be powered with an internal battery,it also makes use of an AC adapter.
modern laptops comes with Bluetooth and wifi radios built into the motherboard, some also comes with a sim slot which can used to answer calls and send text messages also the sim slot makes it possible to connect to the internet as it acts like a modem which makes it more preferable to desktop computers.
Some comes with touchscreens and some can be converted to tablets as it has a 360° rotatable upper lid.
Some Laptops also comes with a camera which is called a webcam which can be used to make online video calls and a built in mic so that you will not need an external mic and also the webcam can be used to take pictures like you do with your smart phones and the mic can be used to record sounds just like a sound recorder.
Some laptops feature a pointing stick which can be used in place of the mouse pad as the pointing stick is built in the middle of the keyboard which helps in typing and making use the mouse at almost the same time unlike in desktop computers that has external mouse which need some stretching of the hand to reach.
The term laptop and notebooks have been used interchangeably over the Years but the truth is that when laptops were manufactured the term laptop was given to it as it was intended to be used on the lap, But over the years laptops which were more thin and less bulkier and less heavy were manufactured and was given the name notebooks as their sizes were as portable in comparison to an A4 paper.
The only catch is that laptops are not highly customizable like desktop computers because
Their processors are soldered onto the motherboard unlike desktop computers.
Their ram slots are just two which makes it so limited to 32gb of ram which is extremely rare some only have 8gb as their maximum upgrade while desktops can reach up to 1 terabytes of ram.
The heat sink and fan cannot be upgraded while desktops fans and heat sinks can be upgraded to boost heat absorption and dissipation.
Laptop motherboards cannot be upgraded as it's shape is unique to that particular model casing unlike desktops which can have upgraded motherboards even if you have to make a new screw holes to fit in the board.
Though laptops are great desktops are also highly customizable which makes it great as well
