After months of studies and clinical trials, the World Health Organization finally announces the failure of the said drug on preventing deaths among the COVID-19 patients. This is according to a study conducted to more than 11,000 patients in 30 countries sponsored by WHO itself.

According to the WHO's released preprint on medRxiv, the clinical study actually used four drugs as their study drugs; which are Remdesivir, Hydroxychloroquine, Lopinavir and Interferon. And it shows that they both all don't reduce the mortality among the COVID-19 patients. So it is conclude that those four drugs appears to have no or little effect on COVID-19 hospitalized patients.

Remdesivir, was the only anti-viral drugs that has received an emergency authorization from the United States' Food and Drug Administration last May, and it was initially intended to be given to those who have severe COVID-19 infection, then later on given to all patients. That study too, prove the ineffectivity of the said drugs in dealing the virus.

Remdesivir, which attacks a specific enzyme in several RNA viruses and was previously tested against Ebola, was initially seen as a promising candidate. In a U.S. trial with more than 1000 COVID-19 patients published last week, those who received remdesivir had a shorter recovery time than patients in the control group, but there was no significant difference in mortality. Two smaller trials found few significant benefits.

Meanwhile, the Gilead Sciences, Inc., the maker of Remdesivir, is disputing the WHO's report arguing that there are still many possibilities and combinations of drugs in treating COVID-19 in which, they have found out that it still has beneficial effects. Another factor that possibly affects the result of the studies was that the study were conducted on different countries with different system on administering the drug. Thus, it may lead into inconsistency of the results of the study.

While the Philippines is on the 20th spot with a total of 351,750 cases.
