An Observation to the Filipino Entertainment Industry.

What has been the problem with the Philippines' Media Entertainment? Well, the truth is, it is more commercialized than aesthetic. Mostly, if you want to become known in the industry, you must be come from a socio-economic class that has both the money and name. Or, you must have a scandalous past for you to be known by many. Internet helps those individual to sensationalize and market themselves.

These are the things that I observe about the Philippines' media entertainment:

TV & Movies

  • Too formulaic/patterned. There is an obvious pattern on some movies and TV series. It is highly predictable and you can surely predict what will happen next or what will be the end. Such plot is that a poor girl will have an intimate relationship with a young rich man. Or, a villain will kidnap the main character.

  • The original works tend to have a low TV ratings, maybe due to lack of promotions. So the producers decided to make some known plot to entice more viewers. Sadly, you can only watch original stories from Korean Drama, which most of the time, have some interesting twist.

  • Too much exposure of a popular actor or actress. They will capitalize a celebrity's fame until it worn out. But they will just relegate them to a corner until they are trend again.

  • Old show are rehash. The reason, again, it's the lack of originality. They can't, or they won't, create original content. They will just use the same old plot but with new latest trend celebrity.

  • Nonsensical content is used instead of the educational one. If there are still remaining educational contents, they are on some dedicated channel which may not most likely available to non-cable users. Or they are aired during classes. So who's gonna watch them?

  • It is almost a tradition in Philippines cinema to have a love story as its theme. Filipinos love to watch every movies to have that "kilig" factor, but it's getting old when it's comprises almost 90 percent of Filipino movies, all about love. Again, same old story, with a new place like Paris, Barcelona, or Japan. And they always feature the hippest love team in the country. Filipinos love to watch their idol love team.

Music

It seems that Philippines music has it's issues also, and it's almost identical to the movie and TV industry.

  • Philippines is known to have a large number of talented singers and performers, that's a fact. But it seems that the true talents are not known by many, while they keep in idolizing some "singers". Those popular idols are pushed in the industry even though they are bad at it.

  • Philippines have a lots of those original content, and that's a saving grace of the industry. They are just on the underground platform because they are not played in the mainstream. And because, they are not advertised properly.

  • I heard that the OPM(Original Pinoy Music) Board didn't recognize music that are not ballad, or kundiman-like, or patriotic songs, because for them, it's not a Filipino music. Hip-hop, rock, and other genres are viewed by them as foreign music even though they made by Filipino artists. This act is pretty shameful because those are the songs that has the originality, not just always singing about love but about everything.

Printed Media

  • Novels are again, all about love. If the 90's and early 2000 has pocket books, in the present, they have wattpad. But it just the same old story line that is rehashed over and over again.

  • I haven't been exposed to some local printed media, so I can't give any fair opinion about it.

Entertainment is supposed to be enjoyed ny many, but the viewers/readers deserve some decency, they deserve better quality masterpiece. It seems that they all want is to have lots of profits instead of giving quality entertainment. The sense of entertaining is gone.

Thanks for reading.

The saddening reality is that, Filipinos value more of the media from foreign countries. Well, their form of entertainment is really exceptional. The twists and plots of their series are unpredictable. Kdrama, to name one. The Filipino media industry is kind of adapting it making to be trying hard and forced. 😬

I totally understand why we can't produce Hollywood-like quality movie, it needs a large budget. We are now behind by our neighboring asian countries like Thailand and South Korea.

That's so true. It needs a large budget. These countries you mention are rich though so they're on a different level now.
