SAARC means South Asian Association for Regional Co-operation organised with seven countries of South Asia.

These countries of South Asia has common social, economic, cultural and political background. The leaders of these countries had been realising the necessity of forming a committee for co-operation among them.

Late President Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh proposed for a summit conference among the leaders of these countries. As a result, a committee has been formed for regional co-operation.

The foreign secretaries of thess countries formed a committee of the whole. The committee decided the fields of co-operation. The fields are agriculture, rural development, weather, telecommunication, health, family planning and scientific development.
