Examination or test is an assessment intended to measure student’s knowledge, skill, aptitude, or classification in many topics. A test or examination may be administered verbally, paper-based or on a computer in a confined area and the candidate is required to physically perform a set of skills. Success in any examination involves time and hard work. Passing examination requires a particular which is easy to learn. Don’t limit yourself. If you believe you can pass, you can.

Basic preparation before the examination

‘Proper preparation prevents poor performance’ is a popular axiom. For a student to pass any examination, there must be adequate preparation. There must be decision, determination, dedication and discipline to success. The following points must to be considered:

(I) Attempt past question papers. This will help you to read the mind of the examiner and understand the marking scheme. In any school setting, be it high school or college, previous examination questions can serve as reference to a current exam. The layout and even some or most questions will likely come out from previous examinations.

(II) Understand the layout of the examination. Observe how the questions are structured from the topics.

(III) Focus on what you don’t know. You don’t need to waste time on what you already know but can perform a brief revision on it. Spend more time on the topics you find difficult

(IV) Use mnemonics: These are abbreviation or acronym that can be utilized to aid reading. Forming acronym for example, the MR NIGER D acronym tells us about the characteristics of living organisms which denotes: Movement, Respiration, Nutrition, Irritability, Growth, Excretion, Reproduction and Death. As simple as that!

(V) Memorize key ideas and formulae. One of the keys to memorize ideas is to write them in small charts and hang it somewhere conspicuous. Seeing those formulae daily registers them in your brain

(VI) Taking summary notes. Prepare for examination by taking short notes, which you can recall quickly at the time of taking examination

(VII) Using the SQ3R method: The SQ3R is an efficient method for preparing for examination which has helped many students including myself. The acronym stands for: Survey, Question, Read, Review and Revise. It's a stepwise procedure for proper preparing for an examination.

First, you Survey. It starts by taking a topic you intend to read and glance through it. You then ask yourself some questions on it, that what the Question has to do. After this, there's definitely going to be some parts you can answer, so you read it properly now, by spending sufficient time to understand it. Review what you've read again and Revise them afterwards by asking yourself more questions on it.

Boosting performance during examination

You can enhance your performance during examinations if you look into the following points:

(I) Get to the venue of the examination in good time: no matter how short the distance, get there with time to spare preferably thirty minutes or more as this will prevent moving in haste to the venue

(II) Pay attention to the instructions: Every examination be it written or oral will always have a set of instruction(s) attached to it. Follow the rules promptly

(III) Read the questions properly: Don’t just rush into providing an answer to a question; be sure of what the examiner requires

(IV) Set aside time for notes before you tackle the questions: Before you start writing, spend a few moments preparing your answer with brief notes and key features you want to mention.

(V) Present your work neatly: Don’t rush your writing so that it can be read by examiner. If you need to make changes, make sure that it is clearly crossed out. Write legibly in term of paper and pen test (PPT) and constructive in a computer based examination

(VI) Don’t panic: believe God to bring your knowledge to your remembrance, stay focused and you’ll surely achieve the best

Place of God in passing examination

Success comes from above. Absolute trust in God is key to passing examination and attaining success in academics as God is the Author of promotion and success. Believe wholely on God because the human strength and power only can’t take you too far but putting God in place.
