The bird has suffered due to poachers.

Doctors of the Irkutsk Zoogallery have restored the ability to fly to the Red Book Saker Falcon by increasing its feathers.

Saker Falcon and another bird, the peregrine falcon, were seized in August from two foreign nationals suspected of poaching. Later, three more people were detained in this case. From the moment of their rescue, the birds lived in the Irkutsk Zoo Gallery. The peregrine falcon, who almost did not suffer, was soon released into the wild. The feathers of the Saker Falcon were badly damaged - he could not fly.

The injured bird was decided to receive a feather transplant. Contrary to the name, this is a kind of build-up, veterinarians specify.

«The very point of the feather (its part that“ grows from the bird ”) remains native, no living structures are affected. Only the missing part is restored at the expense of donor feathers, in our case these were different fragments from 9 to 12 cm. That is, from a piece of feather remaining in the wing, a whole is obtained, suitable for flight. At the same time, the bird does not experience any pain, it simply hates everyone for being held firmly in an uncomfortable position», experts say.

Such difficult operations are performed in veterinary clinics in Germany, but specialists from Irkutsk successfully coped with their own efforts.

With extended feathers, the bird will be able to return to nature, they are sure in the Irkutsk Zoo Gallery. Two years later, the Saker Falcon will begin to molt - the bird will grow new, native feathers.
