Wu Wei: Action by not Acting
The best course of Action
Some days ago I've talked about why not knowing what you really want out of life can be detrimental to you and how finding that object will make things much more easier to do, as you will enjoy the process of going there. In this article I will talk about a pretty similar concept, though guided more by two philosophies/ways of thinking, confucianism and taoism, one that dictates that best course of action for a particular situation is "not acting". However, "Not acting" in this context shouldn't be confused with doing nothing, as what this means is going more according to our own nature and the way the world progresses, letting go of those things that we don't really want and prioritizing what's best for our own being. I will begin by defining Wu Wei in a more detailed fashion, with some examples as to clarify how It really is meant to work and the many benefits It can bring to your life. let's begin.
What Wu Wei really means?
As I've mentioned before, Wu Wei is a term of chinese dialect that is based in the philosophy of taoism, one which explains that the best way to act is to not act, meaning by this that you should make whatever you do with little to no conscious effort, in this way discarding all those things that feel forced to you and leaving you only with those things that are more meaningful to you to the point of not feeling like a work of will at all. As an example of this, you can picture yourself as a math teacher, one which makes a constant effort to bring himself to the desk every morning and teach every class. However, at the same time he works as a pianist in a local café at weekends, a job that he really enjoys and brings a smile to his face every night that he plays, making It feel like he's not even working, so he goes everyday without hesitation and has the best time while he gets paid.
In this way you can see the Wu Wei applied, in those activities which you feel aligned with and that seem natural to you, so you don't make any use of energy for the decision of making It, you just bring yourself to do It because of the mere fact that you enjoy practicing It.
The Main Benefit of Wu Wei
The principal advantage that this principle brings is the same that It predicates, effortless work. By applying Wu Wei into your life you'll be able to recognize those things that really bring your best qualities to the surface and give you the most satisfaction, with which you will reach greater achievements and make much more progress because of what It represents to you, being able to say that you're "aligned" with your nature.
With the information presented I hope that I could have given you enough understanding of this beautiful phrase and what It really means, making you think deeper about what really want to do with your life and in this way make your advance as a person and a professional easier and more effective. Thank you for your support and good luck!
