Picking up right where we left off:

As we have mentioned in the last instance of this series, EQs are perhaps one of the most important tools that we have at our disposal when mixing tracks, As we can basically alter the whole composition of It by controlling Its frequencies. We had mentioned the most common type of filters that are usually used to cut some frequencies in the mix while allowing others in. Now we'll focus more in the categorization of this devices, being either by Its function or by their Interfaces. Now,, let's begin by focusing at two different approach of Equalization, Additive Equalization and Substractive Equalization.

Substractive Equalization:

When we hear an undesired frequency we usually take the easiest approach, which is just cutting off completely or reducing the amplitude of theat amplitude to a bearable point, while letting the other frequencies stand out and hide the imperfection of the track in question. Seeing from a technical standpoint, this type of Equalization Is the best from the 2 when It comes to functional mixing, by taking off muddy frequencies, making a sound stand further back in the mix (By cutting some of the high freqs) and giving Headroom to the whole track when the lost volume is compensated.

Additive Equalization:

As simple or even more than the substractive equalization, It bases itself in boosting certain frequencies from the others, making them stand out and giving character to the sound. This is used more for what we call "Creative mixing" Where by accentuating some characteristics of the sound (for example, making the sound clearer by boosting some freqs in the 3k-5kHz range).

As we have seen in these two techniques of equalization, we might recognize their best use by the situation that presents when It comes to modifying the tone of a sound, whether we want to just cut off some frequencies from It or boost the most vibrant part of It. We hope that this information had been of help to you and that It can spark your interest for these gorgeus devices further. In the next parts we'll study the different types of EQs: Parametric, Semi-Parametric, Dynamics, etc...
