Comfort is Killing You
Slowly Sucking Your Soul Out of You
We all have passed through different situations, situations that range from really bad to really good, with a gray area in the middle. Being really bad is a painful scenario, where you don't see the light at the end of the tunnel, even though, eventually, It comes. One thing many people say to soothe themselves during these periods is that at least things couldn't be worse and you can only go upward. If you're doing really good you'll have a big smile in your face, performing at something meaningful and having all areas of your life covered, focusing in the next thing you can solve or create, all with great mood. However, the most dangerous of all these states is what we consider as good enough, where you don't feel like there's something inherently bad that might be bothering or putting your lifestyle in a position of risk, though there's not something that might be motivating you in a particularly positive way or making you head towards a change for the better. This comfort that permeates the life of many people, even If not noticeable firsthand is killing their spirit, making their existence duller day by day, rotting them and not giving them incentives to guide them towards the best version of ourselves. That's why in this article I'll talk about the dangers of comfort, why we're not wired to be in a state of stasis and why you should strive to do the most you can do. Let's begin:
Why comfort affects us so much?
In our primitive past, uncertainty was present everywhere in our lives. From gathering enough food to provide for our tribes, to the treatment of illness that were previously considered deadly, and even getting enough resources to survive the winter, our minds were constantly shifting from one problem to the other. All of these worries had characterized what our brain is programmed for, making tranquility seem as a calm before the storm and forcing us to think in the things that we should be doing, things that If we tried to evade, would only pop out in our conscience stronger. Since a great part of the population has their basic needs covered and we don't have to pass through life threating situations like those in the past, we find ourselves at a point where It's reasonable for many to think that we can afford comfort without going upwards or downwards, however, this static lifestyle has a definitive toll on us, as a feeling of guilt and boredom will overtake us and force us to act either in good or bad ways, all in order to force us into action.
Now that we know how too much comfort affects us, we can begin to consider solutions in order to actually head towards what we consider valuable and avoid all the dangers of being stuck in a rut:
1.- Listen to yourself.
As I've pointed before, your brain will alert you when you're being too enmeshed with your comfort, triggering a response through an overwhelming feeling of anxiety, boredom and shame towards the relative lack of ambition in the way you're living your life in a particular moment. That's why you should listen to this voice in your head, making It a catalyst for action.
2.- The response is in what you fear
Most of the time the reason why you don't actually go and do what you should is because you're scared of what might happen in the process of making It, whether in the form of refusal from people you know and admire or strangers; or in the disappointment of not being able to live to your own expectations. However, something that you don't take into account is the fact at the beginning there are no expectations of success and that people are so enmeshed in their own heads that they won't pay attention to anything you do most of the time. That's why you should consider as the best option those things that you fear doing.
3.- Not being in the right path
Sometimes you feel that you are too comfortable when you are in an area that doesn't challenge you or your capacities. This might be the result of something that is not really interesting or meaningful enough for you to pursuit. That's why once in a while you should check your priotiies in order to consider If what you doing is what you really want to do. In order to find something that you really want.
I hope that with the information presented I could have shown why comfort is slowly killing you, making you understand that we're not accustomed to being in the same place our whole lives and what you can do in order to avoid this common tendency in the modern world. Thank you for your support and good luck!
