Educational Psychology: Philippine Setting

This has been my deepest desire to conduct such research or find a solution to a certain field in psychology here in the Philippines. The field that I am choosing is Educational Psychology and Child Counselling Centers (Child Psychology). I am not choosing Educational Psychology because I think the system here in the Philippines sucks or the government gives too little attention to it, rather school is the place we mostly spend our day from grade school up to college, and this is the place we send our future children to learn more about the world and to themselves.

Home should be our first school but not everyone has a home, but most of us go to school. School become an escape from the terrible homes of many children, I have witnessed that. There are numerous students who had shown behaviors that were a result of various types of abuse, this takes place mostly in the public school where the population of students is being outnumbered and there are only a few guidance counselors, the ratio is not even, for every school counselor he/she shoulders 500 students. This standard does not always follow, I have encountered when I was in junior high school we only have 1 school counselor per year level and we have 16 sections per year having 50 plus students in each section. The sad part, despite having a large volume of students who enrolled at the end of the school year the number of dropouts and repeater is unimaginable. That is only the surface problem, every school year there is a number of students who attempt suicide, successfully committed suicide, engage in drugs, joined gangs, joined robbery, being raped, become rapist, become stripper, teenagers pregnant, and other juvenile act. I have lost many friends because they were struggling at that time and I was too young to understand their struggle, if only there were enough people who could reach out to us at that certain phase of our lives I might still see hope and life through there eyes. They might have become the person they desire to be, they might have developed their talent, they might have found their purpose, and they might have done more than.

We are right there, we can't give students home that they deserve or replace their parents but we can help them to become much more responsible adult, and when the time has come they might learn in us how to become a parent they never have and how to build a home they never had. Children are the tomorrow of the country if they are being guided correctly. The solution for this problem is that the government must see that this is not only "depression that can be cured by looking at the new manila bay" that thing is ridiculous. The government must start to see that the notorious criminal was once a child and if he had only given the help he could be somebody else today, he might not be sitting on a death row waiting to be executed because he had killed out of anger, he might be wearing a white coat and holding a stethoscope.

The government is so going crazy putting criminals behind the bars, why not we prevent children on becoming a criminal by guiding them to finding their purpose and helping them to understand that their trauma is not their fault. How about that?
