In 1532 pizarro found himself in the great Inca Empire that streched for 1,988 miles (3,200km) down the west coast of south America. With his band of well-armed men, Pizarro led the way up the rough road that wound high into the Andes Mountains. At the town of Cajamarca, the Spaniards were met by the Inca emperor, Sapa Inca Atahualpa, and his attendants.

Like Moctezuma,Atahualpa welcomed the stangers with hospitality. But the Spaniards ambushed the unsuspecting Incas, killing the spa Inca's followers and kidnapping him. They locked him in one of the temples in Cajamarca and proceeded to loot the town and the tents of the Inca army. They collected all the gold, silver, and jewelry that they could find.

A ransom betrayed

When Atahualpa saw the Spaniards' greed for gold,he came up with a plan. He made a pledge that,in return for his freedom, one of the halls of halls the temple should be filled as high as he could reach with gold, and twice over with silver.Pizarro and his men could not believe their ears. They quickly agreed to the Sapa Inca's terms, but secretly they had little intention of ever setting him free. On Atahualpa's orders, gold and silver began pouring in from all corners of the empire. The Spanish watched in disbelief as huge sheets of gold that had been ripped from temple walls, finely worked statues, bowls and dishes, and ornaments and jewelry of all kinds were brought to Cajamarca. Just as they had done in the Aztec Empire, the Spaniards melted down most of the gold and silver objects they seized and transported the metal in bars back to spain. They put Atahualpa on trial and, on a pretense, executed him. Them they marched to the Inca capital,Cuzco, and captured it. The Inca Empire had falle.
