Found in the Alligatoridae family, Caiman are reptiles, more like crocodiles but flattened and wide bodies with their eyes and nostrils located at the top of their snout.
Caimans belong to the king animalia, order of crocodilia, and the chordata phylum.
Caimans can be found in wetlands across central and south America and these reptile is the most closely related to the alligators.
Just like other crocodili, the caimans have strong and powerful tail that helps to propels its movement in water. With it flat head and strong jaws, caimans can prey on larger animals and feast on them.
Thou, they cannot chew their prey, instead they swallow smaller prey.
Caimans spend most hours of their day, resting on the edges of rivers, chilling under the sun and do most of their biddings at night.
Caimans breed mostly during wet season and that is around May to June.The female caimans build nest or dig mud up to 1.5m and then lay her eggs.
After hatching, the female caiman carried the newly born offsprings to the river in her mouth and there she can stay up to a year protecting them from predators.
