When you have to sit in a jam on the way home from the office, listening to music with headphones on is the only way to get rid of annoyance, isn't it? Nowadays we rely on headphones for listening to music, watching videos or chatting. But the use of extra headphones can cause ear damage.

You may not be listening continuously, but the volume is at its peak whenever you put the headphones on. Thus your chances of hearing loss are increasing very fast.

The way sound travels from the ear to the brain

The inner part of our ear, the inner ear, has tiny hairs called stereosilia. These hairs vibrate when we hear a sound, a kind of electrical signal that is sent to the brain through these vibrating nerves. When someone listens to music at high volume regularly or for long periods of time, there can be permanent damage to the stereoscilia, which can lead to hearing loss.

Which can

Not more than an hour: The World Health Organization advises 1 hour a day to listen to music with headphones.

Good quality headphones: There are different quality and price headphones available in the market. If you enjoy listening to music all day long, then buy a pair of headphones that cost a little more. Good quality headphones have good bass quality, which means you don't have to listen to loud music, at low volume you get the maximum taste of the melody.

Pause: You are listening to the song, at the end of a song, take a break. Turn on the headphones or pause on the music player and walk around. Try to avoid noisy, noisy places.

Don't shout: When listening to music, keep the volume so that you can easily hear someone close to you, without having to shout.

Turn down the volume and listen: Doesn't the surrounding sound sound good? Want to immerse yourself in the world of music? Then buy large headphones instead of ear bud headphones, which are covered with foam and cover the whole ear. Noise canceling headphones are also available in the market, which will free you from the noise around you. The headphones that we usually use (ear bud headphones), when we use them, the surrounding sound gets more ears.

Be aware of food: Basically listening to music at low volume can protect hearing. However, there are some foods that will save you a little bit of this risk. Vegetables like oranges, lemons, capsicums, green peppers and broccoli are rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, vitamin E and magnesium which sharpen our hearing.

Ear plugs: Concerts and music festivals have very high volume, which can damage the ears. In this case, using a good quality ear plug will protect your ears, it will not be difficult to enjoy the time.

Teach children now: Children need to be made aware of the dangers of listening to high volume music from an early age, so that they become aware of hearing loss. There are app sound meters and decibel meters for smartphones, through which children will learn about sound while playing.

When do you understand the level of noise?

60 decibels: This is not considered too much. Such as - general conversation.

85 decibels: If you hear anything at this level for more than 8 hours in a row, there is a possibility of permanent damage to the ear. Such as - the sound of a bulldozer.

100 decibels and more: Permanent damage to the ear is guaranteed if you hear something at this level for only 15 minutes every day. For example - listening to music at the highest volume of the smartphone or speaker.
