After a lot of thinking and joining parts together, I am finally ready to write this article. Maybe you can think "This is a very simple topic, we all know what fitness is. What's more there to think??" But the thing I just can say that, take your time and read the whole article. This may change your perspective on fitness. So let's see what interesting topic we get to know today.
General definition of fitness
In general, fitness is the condition of being physically strong, healthy, maintaining a sound figure and being free from all the diseases. It's the state of having capability of doing a task suitably. Generally fitness is achieved though physical exercise, having a healthy and maintained life, having a nutritious meal and taking proper rest.
In short, to us, fitness is health figure, strong muscle, strong abilities and free from diseases. But do you really think this exercise stuff, diet, running, push-ups etc etc, these are only stuffs related to fitness??? Let's see what's more there in this area. I am sure you are going to enjoy this one.
Fitness
The science says, fitness is the ability of reproduction. The more you can attract the opposite gender and have offsprings and spread your gene to the population, the more fit you are.
Another definition says, it's the ability of adapting to the environment and having better ability of surviving and reproduction. Here, the more your capabilities and appearance help to survive, the more fit you are.
So here, let me give you some examples. The cockroach can survive in almost every kinds of environment. That why these arthropods are vastly seen almost everywhere in the world as they have higher adaptation ability to survive in any kind of environment. You have seen the movie WALL-E, you have seen after the devastating condition, when there was no trace of life and a robot was sent there to fix, there was one cockroach living there and became their companion. They have higher ability and that makes the creature more fit than us.
So there are obviously more factors apart from healthy body, strong muscle and free from diseases that determines whether you are actually fitting or not. Let's have a look at it.
1. Capability to evolve
Outside world is not as easy you think. There are both pray and predators. A wrong move and it can cost your life. You adaptibility and disguise gives a greater chance to survive in this world. Let me give you an interesting example:
All snakes are not venomous. In most cases, the more colourful the snake is, the more venomous it is. And a non-venomous snake has more chances of getting attacked by hunters than the colourful venomous snake. So scientists performed an experiment. They placed toy models of both a colourful Eastern Coral snakes and colourless garden snakes. Then the result showed that the colourless garden snake model was attacked frequently by many birds whereas the colourful one was attacked less and rarely.
So, now we move to the evolution part. A snake called King Scarlet snake who is non venomous mimics the colour of the venomous snake and through evolution it gained colour like Coral snakes. The snake model was attacked more than the Coral one but much much less than the Garden snake one.
So, here we can see, the mimic thing works for the King scarlet snake and giving him better ability to survive in the environment.
So, you can see, the size and shape is both the same. In fact, the garden snake is much more thick and big than this cute looking one. But here he is the vulnerable one.
So hope, you understood how the evolution actually worked for the King Scarlet Snake. That's why he is more fit than the normal garden one instead of being less strong and non-venomous too.
2. Physical Appearance
Yes, physical appearance is one of the facts that fall into the area of being fit. Not that 6 pec or muscle builder. Here the thing is a little different. More like beautiful and cute.
Here, the thing is little interesting. Our unconscious mind always want our DNA to spread more and more throughout the population and also want to have a better offspring. That's why we want to have the guy with good ability so that we can have it in our offsprings and our offsprings can more also. That's how our gene spread in the population. So physical appearance also holds an important part of being fit. Let's see an interesting fact here.
A peahen chooses long-tailed peacock over short tailed peacock. So, that's why the number of short-tailed peacock is decreasing as the peahen wants to reproduce with the long-tailed one and have more attaractive offspring so that it can reproduce more. So their race will live longer and short tail can extinct on day. So their both reproduction ability and survival rate of their species is low. So here long-tailed one is the more fit than short-tailed one.
Reverse order
Sometimes, the most attractive one is hunted by man for various kind of accessories. Wolf skin, bear skin, rhino horn, elephant teeth, snake skin are very demandable which makes people hunt down the beautiful and attractive ones. Then these kind are more vulnerable. Like there are many kinds of tiger species but the Royal Bengal one is on the verge of extinction. So as jaguar is.
3. Environmental Conditions
Sometimes it's on the environment whether you are fit of not. Environment and the surroundings are the parameter of you survival ability in that environment. Example time.
Black moth and white moth. We often see, die to pollution the roadside areas become dusty and tress become black. So the blackish background give the black moths to hide from predators and have more surviving ability. But the white one become expose to the environment and that makes him more vulnerable and they get catch the eyes of the predators.
Reverse can happen too here.π π
So here the environment sometimes chooses if you are fit to be there or not.
4. Courage and confident
This is kind of part of of your smartness. We human are less strong than some animals. But yet it's our brain that made us better than them and also increased our ability to survive in this world. But overconfident and courage is sometimes pushes you to make the wrong decision here and that may cause you to lose your life.
Few days ago, a female dog gave birth to 5 puppies. Among them two were very very strong and I always had to go down and hold them so that the rest tree weak puppies could eat. But those fit and strong two started to roam a lot outside the area where as the 3 weak ones stayed ear their mom. Somedays later, I heard one tried to cross main road and got killed and other was killed by the dogs of another area. But the less fit ones survived.
You have seen lion king may be?? Simba was little, still he went to the territory of the Hyena which cost the life of his dad.
So, sometimes smart moves helps you to survive rather than being the overconfident one. We human are example of it. We have higher capability to survive in the world more. And also a woman will not choose a tarzan nowadays over Bill gates. So fitness is not actually the slim, hot figure, muscles actually. It's the ability to ability to survive and make your life better and have healthy offspring.
In past, we used the physical abilities more and woman would choose the most strong one. Cause then physical strength was the main thing. And they would be strong to pray, fight with others to protect themselves and their offsprings will be heathy too. So it was always about the survival and reproductive capability thing.
In the end, I want to say, I never excluded the general concept of the fitness we know. A healthy body obviously helps you in critical condition to survive. Not only that, it helps you to protect your body from diseases and that helps your surviving ability as well. So, at the end I can say, fitness holds more area than you think.
