Drug Addiction

Drug addiction has become a devastating national problem in our country. Up to the sixties it was a problem of the developed industrial countries of the West. Since the end of the sixties it has spread to such underdeveloped countries like Bangladesh. Nowadays drug addiction has become a destructive social force that eats into the vitals of the nation.

An irresistible attraction for some harmful things may be termed as addiction and the materials. which cause intoxication in man, are called drugs. These drugs include opium, morphine, pethidine, heroine, cocaine; marijuana, hemp, charas, bhang etc. Morphine, pethidine and heroine are nothing but opium in one form or another and are taken through injection. Hemp, charas, bhang, cocaine and marijuana are made from herbs and are taken by smoking. These drugs are used for their intOXIcation and stimulating effect. An addict cannot go without them. There will be terrible reaction in his body, which can be relieved only by taking the drug.

Drug addiction is spreading like pestilence in Bangladesh. The number of addicts are being multiplied rapidly. There are many reasons for this rapid increase in the number of drug addicts. The impact of Western pseudo-culture has misled a section of our youth to find relief in the tranquilizing effect of drugs. Acute unemployment, abject poverty, political instability, lack of social security, lack of any particular aim in life-these are other reasons for frustration of a greater section of our young generation who easily fall victim to drug addiction.

Drugs have terrible effect on human body. It carries the addict to an unreal world of dreams. This is called hallucination. The addict feels drowsy. loses appetite and feels like vomitting. The poisonous effect of drugs is dangerous. They damage the brain, impair all internal function of the body and ultimately lead to death.

The remedy for drug addiction is not very easy. Inordinate greed of the drug traders holds sway in the present-day world. Drug business is punishable and the highest punishment is death sentence in Bangladesh. Recently in a sensational drug smuggling case an American young woman named Elieda Macord and a Nigerian young man Robert Blank Son alias Tony have been sentenced with Iife imprisonment in Bangladesh. This law must be enforced much more strictly. Our young generation must be made aware of the dangerous effect of drug taking.
