How to maximize your time when reading

So many articles scattered throughout read cash. There are the highly interesting, averagely interesting and uninteresting ones.

Most times the header of the article is enough to capture your attention while for some it is the other way round. Some with a captivating header but a poor content while others with a poor a header and interesting content. There's the elite article with both a captivating header and an interesting content. There's the worst of all, the one with the poor header and an uninteresting content.

For you to ascertain and read as many articles as you can within a short period of time, there are ways to go about it , and I'll be addressing them here.

1. SKIMMING AND SCANNING THROUGH THE ARTICLE

These two techniques involve looking for the most relevant bits of information first, this will hint you on what the article is about. Since you’re already familiar with the main parts of the text, you won’t be slowed down by confusing or surprising parts when you come to them in your reading.

Keep in mind that this works best for non-fiction, it can also be used for a fiction article.

2. STOP READING IN YOUR HEAD

Most of us read by speaking the words in our heads. This slows down our reading to speaking speed, which is usually around 300 words a minute. A very slow pace. Your eyes and brain are actually able to process words much faster. I'll advice to try this to experience it's effectivity.

By stopping that voice in your head, you can nearly double your reading pace.

If you’re a person used to reading in your head, getting yourself to stop is quite the trick to learn how to read faster. The easiest thing to do to overcome this is to be conscious of it and to distract yourself somehow. You can use your finger to follow the words and listen to music.

3. READ PHRASES, NOT WORDS

This is another difficult skill to learn, to learn how to take in phrases or chunks of text at a time, rather than individual words. But your eye span is actually 1.5 inches long, which means you can read up to nine words at a time.

Looking at every fifth word or so will allow you to take in more at once and cut down on reading in your head. Just like every other thing else, it will take some training to do this well.

4. STOP RE-READING

One of the biggest time consumers while reading is to constantly goback to re-read sentences or paragraphs you either didn’t understand or wanted to understand more fully. You would want to think that if you didn’t fully grab or understand every single line of an article, the entire article wouldn’t make sense.

Eventually, you will realize that you actually was not gaining much comprehension when you re-read. The confusing phrases or words eventually made sense in context, or they weren’t necessary in the article
