She had suffered many things from many physicians, she had spent all that she had in the hope that she will be cured of this terrible illness, but rather than get better, she grew worse. All hope that she will ever be healed probably died at that point until she heard about Jesus and her hope revived. This story of the woman with the issue of blood for twelve years recorded in all the synoptic gospel is indeed a highly inspirational story. Although it was not recorded as a major event but was instead recorded as a sub event, it almost overshadowed the major event that led to it. The major event here was that Jesus was on his way to the house of Jairus whose daughter was seriously sick when this woman came out of nowhere as it were to touch the hem of His garment and she was healed. One of the major reason why this miracles is unique is that unlike other miracles where the person needing the miracle first sought the attention of Jesus and then pleads for His help, this woman did no such thing, she did not seek to gain the attention of Jesus, she was convinced that all she needed to do was to touch the hem of His garment and she will be healed, that certainly was a great demonstration of faith and it worked for her. But oftentimes when we read the story of this woman, what we see is the woman’s action of pressing her way into the crowd to touch Jesus, there is a little detail that many do not seem to notice and that is the fact that this woman made a confession that preceded her touching the garment of Jesus Christ. She said “If only I can touch His clothes I will be made well”, this confession though often ignored in this story was a very vital step to the healing she received –
That confession provided for her the much needed motivation to defy the odds and do all that she had to do to touch Jesus’ clothes
That confession was the expression of her expectation in her quest to touch Jesus
That confession was the verbal expression of her faith – a mental picture of what she believed will happen once she is able to touch Jesus
According to Jewish law this woman was unclean (Lev. 15: 25-27) and this excluded her from social contact because the law commanded it so. Based on this therefore, she knew that touching Jesus will make Jesus unclean, this certainly could be a problem, a reason not to touch Jesus but it was that which appeared to be a problem that gave her a solution to her problem. This woman’s story again establishes the importance of faith, but beyond this however it also reveals that your confession is equally important, faith plus confession releases God’s healing power. Many today claim they have faith, yet if you listen to them what you hear is unbelief and not faith, your confession must match your faith for you to receive your desired miracles, when your confession does not match your faith, then your confession is wrong and when your confession is wrong, your so called faith becomes invalidated and loses its potency to deliver to you the miracle you seek.
So what are you trusting God for in your life? Watch your confession to make sure that it lines up with your belief and your miracle is sure. Shalom.
