The province of Catanduanes is one of the major producers of abaca throughout the country. Therefore, in recognition of the importance and contribution of this product to the provincial economy, Provincial Ordinance No. 021 series of 2015 to hold the annual celebration of the Catanduanes Abaca Festival every fourth week of May.
This year, in coordination with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and Provincial Toursim Office (PTO), the Trade Fair opened for eleven municipalities in Catanduanes to showcase local abaca products.
San Andres inaugurated unique abaca handicrafts such as doormat, rugs, carpets, slippers, frames and more. They came from the creative hands of the Calolbon Handicraft Maker’s Association led by couple Vicente Samonte and Teresa Samonte of Lictin, San Andres, Catanduanes.
Products can be purchased for 250 to 6,000 pesos depending on the design and size of the product.

These products are not only popular among the Catandunganons because they also import them from different parts of the country.

The process of making an abaca handicraft is long and difficult. It takes more than a day to create a 4 square feet doormat. That is why according to Mrs. Samonte needs to take to heart to create a quality product.
