Covid-19, real or scam

I don't usually make my positions known on covid19 related topics because my opinion conflicts the popular opinions of Nigerians online. But since it's an open debate, I can as well make my own contributions to the motion because I believe Nigerians need a whole lot of re-orientation as we move from the first phase of the pandermic to the next, and even more brutal phases.

I believe that the covid19 pandemic is REAL and I also believe that figures being rolled out by the NCDC may have been padded by state governors for monetary gains. But, what I do not believe and I condemn in it's entirety is the school of thoughts that posits that covid19 in Nigeria is FAKE and a SCAM to deceive gullible Nigerians. And I'll buttress my points to suit my narratives

FIRSTLY ON WHY I BELIEVE COVID-19 IS REAL

Why I believe covid19 is real, let's put some of the global trends of the pandemic into perspectives and try to give rational defenses to the authenticity of covid19 cases in Nigeria.

There are 54 countries in Africa and all but 1 of the 54 countries have had cases of covid19 infections within their entente. A more in-depth surge into this Analysis shows that Africa has a total confirmed case of over 300,000 with 8,000 recorded deaths. Egypt with a population of 98million people has over 56,000 confirmed cases and over 2,000 recorded deaths. In west Africa, Ghana has a population of 29million people but has recorded over 14000 confirmed cases of covid19 with 95 deaths. Even the US with a population of 328 million people (Higher than Nigeria) has recorded over 2million covid19 cases, with over 120,000 covid19 deaths, the highest so far. So I find it quite appalling that Nigerians think covid19 is scam, when Nigeria, being the giant of Africa in terms of population has recorded just a little over 20,000 cases with about 533 deaths(lower than Egypt and higher than Ghana). The maniacal cries by Nigerians who take pleasure in rubbishing the presence of covid19 in Nigeria, I think is a testament to the decay in the educational system in Nigeria.

If an Engineer with no understanding whatsoever in the field of medicine can come out boldly to argue about the credibility of covid19 cases with a medical practitioner who is at the frontline of fighting covid19, then it increases the volumes about why Nigeria is still a third world country and retrogressive in every indices of development. The least Nigerians could do, is appreciate our health workers for a job well done in the fight against this pandemic which I believe will serve as a moral booster to health workers on their resolve to fight the pandemic with even more rigour. But if you take a look at NCDC pages online, you'll be amazed to see how NIGERIANS have been bastardizing the whole essence of the public enlightenment campaigns made by the NCDC with derogatory remarks.

I'm sure the whole world will be interested to understand why citizens from a third world country like Nigeria argue with scientific proven facts that covid19 cases are fictitious when it has been declared a global pandemic by the UN, and has ravaged world economies and claimed over a million lives.

Common sense should inform any right-thinking individual that by virtue of Nigeria being the most populous nation in Africa with over 200million extimated population, there should be a huge chunk of covid19 cases in Nigeria. And 20,000 cases out of over 300,000 cases in Africa is less than 7% of the overall cases in Africa and it's a fair share if you ask me, considering our overwhelming demography.

The rational questions Nigerians should be asking are:

1. Is the world battling with covid19 pandemic today? YES

2. Are there covid19 cases on the Africa continent? YES

3. Was there an influx of covid19 infected persons into Nigeria? YES

4. Is Covid-19 a contagious disease? YES

5. Are Covid-19 guidelines being breached by NIGERIANs today? YES

SECONDLY, ON WHY I THINK COVID-19 IS NOT SCAM IN NIGERIA

On the issue of the Covid-19 cases being padded, I believe there's an atom of truth in it because we all saw how Kano state government began to roll out intimidating figures of confirmed cases when federal government supported Lagos State with 10billion naira to help fight the pandemic. But today, Kano's covid19 cases has dwindled tremendously because the federal government refused to dignify the governors 15 billion covid19 request. But this is not enough to dismiss all covid19 cases as false.

THIRDLY, ON WHY I THINK COVID19 IS NOT SCAM IN NIGERIA

I understand that there's mistrust between the government and the ordinary NIGERIAN but people should learn to put things into perspective. Those who had always looted didn't really need the permission of Nigerians nor did they have to create a pandemic to loot. NIGERIA should be a replica of Dubai with the humongous amount of money generated from sales of oil produce yearly, but we are retrogressive today because funds meant to benefit the lives of NIGERIANS were embezzled. Those who siphoned public funds didn't need to formulate a pandemic to steal, they did it with just a a little ink from their pen, they padded budgets and concurred amongst themselves in the red and green Chambers without seeking for your opinion. So I don't see why they'd want to go through the rigmarole of spending money on a pandemic to steal money. It doesn't make sense to me. No responsible government would shutdown it's private and public sectors where they generate revenues from; taxes from the private companies; and allow educational institutions to rot away when the driving power of any economy is it's labor force. I imploy all Nigerians to believe that the covid19 pandemic is real and take preventive measures to combat it because we are all witnesses to what is happening in the US, Italy and china.

A deadly pandemic like covid-19 should not be taken for joke for any reason. We shouldn't wait until some close to us dies before we realise the truth. I think the reason why most Nigerians are reluctant to believe that the pandemic is real because of two things

  1. They still hold on tightly to the notion of seeing is believing, if they don't see it they won't believe it.
  2. Humans don't see what they don't want to see, so they will believe what they feel would benefit them. That's a terrible gamble to be making, despite what anyone wants to believe, the facts remains that covid-19 is real
