Petra is known as the ‘Rose City’ of Jordan. The nickname is for the surrounding pink earthen embankment. Tourists prefer Petra when visiting Jordan. Petra is called the extinct city. The ancient city of Arabia was discovered in 1812 by the Swiss traveler Johann Ludig. Petra became the capital of the Nabataean kingdom in 312 BC, at the foot of Mount Hur, east of Wadi Musa in southwestern Jordan. This city built in caves was a fortified fortress. The high hills and waterfalls around Petra fascinated everyone. When maritime trade began during Roman rule, it began to decline rapidly. In 373 an earthquake destroyed its buildings. Petra's ruins were widely discussed in the Middle Ages. Petra was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. Four years later, in 1989, the Petra National Trust was formed.
