Many at times I have watched with trepidation and shudder – seeing parents (adults) lifting up their babies and kissing them right in the mouth.
No matter how loving you may think this show of ‘affection’ is, believe it or not, it is not a healthy act to be encouraged.
As much as you may want to brush this aside like one piece of bother, it will shock you to know that this simple action born out of good intention and innocence may actually lead to that infant becoming sick due to one infection or the other.
The truth is that we all have bacteria living in our bodies and plenty of them reside right in our buccal cavity or the mouth. When you wake up in the morning try smelling your breath, so you would know what I’m talking about.
In fact research have found that kissing a baby on the lips or anywhere near to the mouth can cause the spread of particular conditions, some harmless and some certainly dangerous for a baby. But, it’s not merely kissing the infant on or close to the lips that may possibly stand as a problem.
According to experts, kissing new-borns on their hands or other parts of the body, which will thereafter make contact with their mouth, is in the same way a problem. Kissing your baby is a good way of showing affection but experts warn that parents should avoid this action as much as possible while also ensuring that others do not kiss their babies on or near the lips especially when they are still very tender.
Again, every part of the human body is populated by bacteria and viruses, which are generally harmless to healthy adults, but can impact on babies negatively. Thus the immune system of infants is not as fully developed or strong enough when compared to that of grown-ups.
It is for this same reason that you must not kiss new born babies, and neither should you allow any other adult to do the same...
