Many people view healthy-looking hair as a sign of health and beauty. Like any other part of our body, hair needs a variety of nutrients to be healthy and grow.
In fact, many nutritional deficiency are link to hair loss. While factors such as genetics and hormones also affect hair growth. Optimal nutrition intake is a key.
Here are vitamins and nutrients essential for hair growth.
1. Vitamin A
All cells need vitamin A for growth. This includes hair, the fastest growing tissue in the body. It also helps skin glands make an oily substance called sebum. It moisturizes the scalp and helps keep hair healthy.
Sweet potato, carrot, pumpkin and spinach are all high in beta-carotene which is turned into Vitamin A.
2. B Vitamins
One of the best known vitamin for hair growth is a B-Vitamin called Biotin.
You can get B-Vitamins from fooda such as wholegrain, almond, meat, fish, seafood and dark-leafy greens.
3. Vitamin C
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect against oxidative stress caused by free radicals.
Our body needs Vitamin C to create a protein called Collagen - an important part of hair structure.
Berries and citrus fruits are all goos sources of Vitamin C.
4. Vitamin D
Research shows that Vitamin D may help create new follicles - the tiny pores on the scalp where new hair can grow.
Our body produces Vitamin D through direct contact with the sun's rays.
Sources of Vitamin D includes fatty fish, cod liver oil, some mushrooms and fortified foods.
5. Vitamin E
Similar to Vitamin C, Vitamin E is an antioxidant that can prevent from oxidative stress.
Sunflower seeds, almond, spinach and avocados are all goos sources of Vitamin E.
Aside from Vitamins, here are nutrients that are essential for healthy hair.
1. Iron
Iron helps red blood cells carry oxygen to our cells. This makes it an important mineral for many bodily functions including hair growth.
Iron deficiency which causes anemia s a major cause of hair loss.
Foods high in Iron includes clam, oyster, egg, red meat, spinach and lentils.

Zinc plays an important rule in hair tissue growth and repair. It also helps keep the oil glands around the follicles working properly.
Foods high in zinc includes oyster, beef, spinach, wheat germ, pumpkin seeds and lentils.
2. Protein
Hair is made almost entirely of protein.
Meat, avocadoes, products from milk, eggs, soy, fish, beans and nuts are good sources of Protein.
Large doses of vitamins and minerals are harmful if you aren't deficient.
So work with a doctor first to determine whether you have deficiency or not.
At the end of the day, the best way to get these nutrients is by eating a balanced, real food-based diet that includes plenty of nutrient-dense foods.
