Many of us usually multiply the discount rate of a product or anything which has a discount to its original price to find out how much money we saved then subtract it to the original price to find out the discounted price. For example a certain product has a discount rate of 20% or 20% off then its original price is 120. Usually for us to know how much we can save once we buy this item, we multiply the discount rate 20%(convert it into decimal which is 0.20) to its original price which is 120. This would be 0.20 x 120 = 24. Then for us to know the new price or discounted price, we subtract it to its original price. This would be 120 - 24 = 96. Therefore, the discounted price is 96.

There is a trick or simplest way to arrive with the same answer since in terms of buying product usually our main focus when it comes to discount is the discounted price. So here it is instead of multiplying the discount rate and subtract the product to its original price, we just need to simply subtract discount rate to 100% or 1 (Don't forget to convert percent to decimal) Since we all that 100% or 1 represents the whole part or mainly the original price and we remove some of it which is the discount therefore the remaining part is the discounted price/amount. Then multiply the difference to the original price and that's it. Furthermore, let's consider again our example above which has a discount rate of 20% and original price of 120. First, subtract 20% to 100% it would be 100% - 20% = 80% (don't forget to convert in terms of decimal which is 0.80) in this step we can easily solve it mentally even other given discount rate let's say 25% therefore, we have 75%. Next step is to multiply it to the original price it would be 0.80 x 120 = 96. Actually this trick saves time because we can calculate mentally the first step which is subtracting the given discount rate to 100% and then multiply it directly to the original price then that would be the DISCOUNTED PRICE.
