Society is increasingly consumptive towards the use of social media, where social media seems to have changed its function from just sharing moments or sharing certain experiences to being a place to show off.

This phenomenon is known as flexing

That is a term for people who like to brag about themselves or the things they have and don't have, including showing their social status and position, creating an impression for others, and showing the abilities that have been achieved.

The existence of social media and increasingly sophisticated technological developments make flexing easier, making it difficult not to flex. If you pay attention, this phenomenon has been rife since the number of people who are dubbed super rich (crazy rich) is increasing.

Through outfits and habits that are identical to expensive items, these crazy rich try to continue to exist and compete to show off their wealth and luxury through their respective social media, because it is more practical, has a very wide reach, and is worldwide. Whereas in the era of Thorstein Veblen, the super-rich flaunted their silver spoons and corsets only through the party of the nobles,

The current era makes someone impatient, wanting everything to be instant and easy. In fact, an unrealistic mindset emerges. How to get success or wealth without lingering or trouble. So there are many cases of fraud.

In fact, this flexing trend often occurs in people who are usually called new rich people. They compete to show off by following a trend to be judged as a sultan or crazy rich.

Where they expect a compliment and flattery. In general, individuals who like to do flexing are often considered to be lying, because what is displayed is actually not real, they fake their life by imposing style and following every trend in order to get validation in their environment. Not a few people deliberately borrow branded goods from other people and are willing to go into debt in order to follow the trend.

It is different with people who are really rich, they tend to keep their privacy and low profile, even they are uncomfortable if their wealth is discussed. The richer a person is, the more silent or not he will show off his wealth. I once heard a saying, which is "poverty screams, but wealth whispers". So it's true that rich people are not noisy and shy about talking about their wealth.

There is a context of consumer behavior which is also known as the theory of conspicuous consumption, namely the purchase of goods or services made to show one's wealth. But rich people will not do that because they protect their privacy. Most of the real rich people actually choose to appear simple and have never been given the title of sultan or crazy rich.

Humans have several needs, one of which is the need to be recognized and appreciated. Flexing is a natural thing because humans want to fulfill their needs, but something that is excessive will also have a direct or indirect negative impact. There is no prohibition to be rich, let alone super rich.

If we look back at the eastern culture, this phenomenon is really concerning. Especially at this time, when the majority of the public are trying to survive, the crazy rich seem to have no empathy for it. This problem is about the mindset and understanding of our religion. Ethically, we should always remain humble and down to earth, because wealth is only a deposit. If we leave it to God, it will surely be given according to our needs.
