As the world race to the covid-19 vaccine continues, Moderna, a Boston based biotechnology institute said it has begin its final stage in a vaccine testing in the United States.
Final stage testing involves giving the experimental vaccine to thousands of volunteers to see how many develops immune responses to the virus, how many become infected and compare it with those given a placebo.
This is the fastest a vaccine has been developed for a novel pathogen as vaccine development usually takes years of testing.
Moderna's trial is being conducted in partnership with the United States National Institute of Health across the country and is among the first five to have reach such advanced stage in testing.
The trial will be large scale with over 30,000 volunteers and across 100 sites which will reflect a good range of demographics and also the population that is most vulnerable to the novel corona virus.
“Although face coverings, physical distancing and proper isolation and quarantine of infected individuals and contacts can help us mitigate Sars-Cov-2 spread, we urgently need a safe and effective preventive vaccine to ultimately control this pandemic,” these were the words of Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious diseases at the early stages of these experiments.
Will this be the breakthrough humanity needs to finally conquer the novel corona virus?
Hopefully but those trials could still take a few more months before the final clearing. Hopefully it's the weakened virus and not just another antiviral like what has mostly bern under clinical trials
