Comets, like asteroids, are small celestial bodies that orbit the Sun. However, unlike asteroids, comets are composed primarily of frozen ammonia, methane or water, and contain only small amounts of rocky material. As a result of this composition comets have been given the nickname of "dirty snowballs."
A comet is an icy, small Solar System body that, when passing close to the Sun, warms and begins to release gases, a process called outgassing. This produces a visible atmosphere or coma, and sometimes also a tail.
The innermost core of a comet, the nucleus, is made up of a combination of rock, dust, ice, and frozen gases. Some of those gasses include carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH4), and ammonia (NH3). The combination of these materials can vary.
