The digital self is the persona you use when you’re online. We all know that most of us are fond of using social media right? We are using social media for us to have an online presence that can be used to identify us in the real world. For some reason people are using their digital self as an escape from reality that is why they are freely expressing theirselves on their social media.
For others, having a digital self is like a dream come true because social medias are helping them to live the life they wanted and maybe they think that through using of social media they can escape in this cruel world.
It makes me happy when I discovered that I can build my self esteem using social media. I can post photos and statuses and receive positive feedbacks in the end. My digital self helps me to experience the freedom that I want. I can express my self in any way I want without being judge physically by everybody.
I can also feel sense of belongingness whenever I use my social media. However, it makes me unhappy when I discovered that I spent almost of my time using social media. I can't do some things because I get fond of the attentions that the digital world are giving me. There are also times that I neglected my studies because I always focus my attention on my digital self.
On the other hand, I value most about my socio-digital self is my freedom to express my self in digital world. I can post anything I want and I can express my feelings that I cannot do in the real world. But sometimes I'm holding back on discovering further about my socio digital self because of the possiblities that it can ruin my life just by using it carelessly. I have already seen and heard the news about some people who chose to end their lives because of the negative impact that the social media are giving them.
That is why I'm holding back because I don't won't to be one of them. Nonetheless, I used the digital world as my motivation to discover further about my self because I know that the digital world can help me a lot in discovering the things I don't know yet about my socio digital self.
In conclusion, the digital world has provided us with greater opportunities to express our identity in any form we want. But what we all need to remember is: how will we feel if we go so far to express ourselves differently online that we forget what reality is, or worse, we end up resenting it?
