Everybody wants to make money, more money and lots of money. Making the money isn't the problem, the problem rather is if one is willing to undertake some necessary risks involved in making It.
Lets look at Aquaculture which we all know is the rearing of economically important fish species. Most people know about the African Catfish and the fact that it has some peculiar qualities that any one venturing into aquaculture would like. Two of this qualities which I consider as the most important in the African Catfish are:
It Grows Very Fast... For one fact nobody would like to venture in a business that takes 2 years to realize profit especially if it involves so much capital investments with no ascertaining it profit would be made. The African Catfish can reach Table size (i.e. the size and weight in which it is preferably bought by people) in as little as 5-6 months of intensive culture and can reach Adulthood in as little as 8-10 months.
It Birth A Lot Of Babies... This is a very interesting one.. Per Kg of African Catfish, it can birth up to 6600 eggs..thats really awesome and definitely its nearly impossible to get a 1kg adult Catfish they are always bigger. These adult catfish are usually called Brood Stocks
Venturing into Catfish culture comes in 3 ways which includes..... 'Sales Of Table Size Fish...I'll say this is the most risky yet has the most profit. Usually, African Catfish doesn't reproduce while in captivity..so in order to make them reproduce one has to increase the reproductive hormone in them by inducing it with artificially made ones like Ovulin.. In the past, the pituitary glands of mature males were crushed and injected into the mature females in order to induce reproduction but thish method is no longer in use as one would have to loose a lot of males to reproduce females. It is one thing for the eggs to be stripped from the Female Brood Stock, it is another for the same eggs to hatch thats why its considered very risky. It takes as little as 5 weeks for the eggs to reach Fingerling stage to be sold out. If not well taken care of, as the eggs are sensitive to change in the environmental temperature, they die. The skill set and experience is very much appreciated in this area if one wants success.
Sales Of Table Size Fish...This is considered to be the most sort after. One buys Fingerling or Juvenile and rear them till it's fit to be sold. Usually it takes 3-4 months for it to attain this size if one started from rearing the hatched Fries/Juvenile. As the Fish keeps growing, unexpected death is greatly reduced. Therefore, there is reduced risks.
Sales Of Brood Stock... Reproduction is one inevitable thing that has to happen when rareing any living thing. Usually less people are involved in this type as the profit is nothing compare to the others.
Rareing the African Catfish is really risky yet profitable. It is also quite intriguing as it's fun to watch them as they feed aggressively, as they suspend themselves in an Animation. I do rare catfish and take me for my words its fun.
