Extinct Animals - Dodo

The common notion is that extinction is a rare occurrence. And when you think of extinction, the dinosaur's face appears in front of your eyes.

But unknowingly many animals around us are getting lost.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature, a non-governmental organization working to protect biodiversity, about 10,000 species are becoming extinct each year.

In biology, extinction usually refers to the extinction of an organism or a group of taxon, or a species. Extinction is usually referred to as the moment of death of the last species of the species, after which no living specimens of that species can be found in the natural environment or archives. However, their ability to reproduce and recover may end before this time. Dodo is often cited as an example of modern extinction.

Dodo's scientific classification:

World: Animalia

Episode: Cordata

Category: Birds

Class: Columbiformes

Family: Columbidae

Subfamily: Raphinae

Mass: Raphus

(Brisson, 1760)

Species: R. cucullatus

Binomial name Raphus cucullatus

(Linnaeus, 1758)

Dodo is no longer seen

In the Indian Ocean there was an island called 'Mauritius' and here lived the pigeon bird called Dodo. The scientific name of the bird is Raphus cucullatus. This bird is about one meter long and 20 kg. Gr. Would have weighed. The birds survived by eating the fruit. Dodo is the most famous bird among the extinct birds.

Like the dinosaurs, this bird became extinct long ago. When there was a human settlement in Mauritius, this bird, which could not fly to meet the demand for food, became extinct. The last time this bird was seen was in late 182.

In 1598, the Dutch explorer Admiral Wiebrand van Warwijk's expedition to Mauritius revealed the first dodo bird. He named it ‘Waglovogen’ meaning ungodly bird. They gave such a name because of the bad taste of the meat of this bird. And he said that the black birds look like pigeons and doves. But there are many differences in shape and weight. They are three and a half feet in length and weigh about 20 kg.

After hatching, the dodo quickly attains adulthood. Their eggs hatched in August. During this time the trees of the island of Mauritius are full of different fruits. Dodo birds used to eat these fruits like gourmets and eat them. That is why the explorers who saw the activities of the dodo bird with their own eyes called it a gluttonous bird.

After hatching in the rainy season, the birds would grow up quickly by eating extra food. From November to March, many storms and disasters hit Mauritius. At this time there is not much food on the island. This rapid growth of dodo birds as a strategy to survive in such hostile environment. Despite being a very fast adult, the dodo had to wait several years for the breed to grow. On the island of Mauritius, there were no birds of prey to feed on. So they used to spread the lineage without fear.

But as soon as people started walking in Mauritius, the dodo became extinct. It is believed that human beings are most responsible for the extinction of Dodo. The bird became extinct less than a century after humans arrived in Mauritius. Dodo made his home on the ground as he could not fly. So it is very normal for eggs to be stolen from these houses. Dodo became extinct as soon as people arrived in Mauritius.

Dodo was a fearless bird. Never preyed on any other animal. But sometimes they became pigs. Many dodos have died in the floods. But the bird has completely destroyed mankind. Dodo's habitat is threatened by deforestation. Dodo's food was the fruit of a type of tree called Tambalacac. With the deforestation, the number of these fruit trees decreases a lot. This shows the lack of food in Dodo. This is how the animal became extinct. The skeleton of this bird is now preserved in a museum in Mauritius.
