The thorny broom (Ruscus Aculaetus) is a shrub of the Liliaceae family. It is generally found in the woods and the undergrowth in particular. It flowers from January to March.
This plant measures up to 80 cm. It is characterized by flattened branches of dark green color resembling leaves and ending in a thorn. It has small white-green flowers tinged with purple and located in the center of the cladodes. The flowers are present from September to April. The fruits are red globose berries, flattened on one side.
The whole plant contains toxic saponosides. However, poisoning is mainly linked to the consumption of mature fruits. They cause vomiting, diarrhea and sometimes hemolysis in domestic carnivores, but are relatively non-toxic nonetheless.
