It is estimated that worldwide 50 to 70% of the population has signs or symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency, often undiagnosed or unnoticed, characterized by the presence of varicose veins in the form of spider veins or trunks, pain, heaviness, fatigue , edema or swelling and cramps in lower limbs. In advanced or more severe states, venous thrombosis, skin discoloration, and even ulceration (1 to 2% of the population) may occur with or without associated infections.
