The sunflower in history:-
The sunflower flower was already present in Greek mythology which depicts it as the lover of the sun, Helios. Clytie, a water nymph, was loved by Helios and the two had a passionate relationship. But one day, as in all love stories in Greek mythology, Helios fell in love with Clytie's sister, Leucothoé. Clythie, mad with jealousy, denounced the relationship to her father, who became enraged, buried Leucothoé alive. Helios, disgusted by this betrayal, did not return to Clytie, who let himself waste away on a rock staring at his beloved sun, Helios, for days on end. Helios finally took pity on the nymph and turned her into a sunflower. sunflower meaning The sunflower flower is now known and cultivated all over the world, in Central Europe, the United States, and in France also mainly in the southern and western regions. On the other hand, the sunflower is not native to Europe and it is only from the 16th century that its seeds reach our regions thanks to the Spanish conquistadors who left to explore the New World. Indeed, the sunflower originates from Latin America where it has been cultivated by Mexicans for more than 8,000 years. The Aztecs already cultivated the sunflower flower which was considered sacred. It represented the Aztec god of the sun, adorned their temples and was used in ceremonies and for food. In Europe it was first used as an ornamental plant before its nutritional properties were discovered in the 18th century by an Englishman who succeeded in extracting its oil. Today the sunflower flower is cultivated around the world for food, but it is also very popular among florists because of its beauty and strong symbolism.
The magic of the sunflower
The sunflower is also a flower rich in uses! Several hundred tons of oil are extracted from its seed per year in France. This oil is part of the human food composition and is extremely rich in trace elements, and omega 6 fatty acids essential to our health! Consuming sunflower oil can replace products made from animal fats and thus helps reduce cholesterol levels in our blood. Its seeds can also be eaten plain or roasted and have excellent nutritional qualities. Once the oil is extracted from the seed, a cake is obtained, which is used in the manufacture of animal feed because it is rich in vitamins. That’s not all, the sunflower stalk is used in the manufacture of cosmetics because it has moisturizing qualities for our skin. Sunflower is also used as bio fuel! Just like rapeseed oil, sunflower oil can be used for diesel engines as a biofuel! In short, it is an extraordinary plant!
