Do you recognize the lead image or the person you see in the picture? Agnibina in one hand, a Poison Flute in the other. A great man with curly hair and every line of his pen trembles with the joy of great creation. One of his tunes in his voice - βI will be calm on that day, when the cries of the oppressed will not sound in the air, the sword of the oppressor will not fight on the land of the frightened Bhima-rebellious war-tired I will be calm that dayβ
He is none other than our national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam who is also known as a rebellious poet in Bengali literature. To the Bengali-speaking people, he seems to be revered as a symbol of rebellion. But that rebellion is very different from all other rebellions in its natural aspect. There is no motive behind this rebellion.
This revolt has been sounded only for the purpose of oppressed people. Neither Sukant Bhattacharya nor Rudra Muhammad Shahidullah wrote poems on rebellion, but each of them was a reflection of Marxist thought. Nazrul was completely independent and his rebellious spirit could never be explained by any political ideology.
His writings for the freedom-loving people- βBreak that iron gate of Kara, break it, cut it, cut the stone-altar of blood-jamtashikal worship. Ore and young Ishan!
Today, on this day, August 26, 1986, he left the world and passed away.
If India claims that the people of the subcontinent were liberated from the yoke of British rule because of Mahatma Gandhi or the Congress, and if Pakistan claims that because of Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the Muslim League, they were able to separate from India and enjoy a separate and independent homeland? Kazi Nazrul Islam was the mastermind behind making this demand of all of them a reality. He has always been behind the scenes.
