  • 1.IQ, short for intelligence quotient, is a measure of a person’s reasoning ability.

  • In short, it is supposed to gauge how well someone can use information and logic to answer questions or make predictions.

The term 'IQ' was coined in 1912 by the psychologist William Stern in relation to the German term Intelligenzquotient.

To know your IQ, you take a standardized test in the presence of a trained professional. IQ tests you find online might be entertaining, but the results aren’t valid.

It’s also important to understand that your IQ score doesn’t exist in isolation. The number actually represents how your results compare to those of other people your age.As time went on, psychologists refined the Binet-Simon test and developed many more — and started to attribute performance to someone’s “general intelligence.

But are IQ tests valid, unbiased measures of general intelligence? They certainly didn’t start out that way, says Stefan C. Dombrowski, a psychologist at Rider University in New Jersey. IQ tests have a dark history of being used to discriminate against racial and ethnic groups, he explains, and ultimately led to the forced sterilization of thousands of people during the eugenics movement.

The need to distinguish ourselves from others around us is perhaps distinctly human. Intelligence as a concept not only sets us apart as a species from the rest of the animals but also enables us to place ourselves uniquely in the company of fellow human beings (Sternberg, 2018). Roughly speaking, the concept of intelligence accounts for the efficacy of the mental functioning that underlies behavior based on specific criteria (Perkins, 1995). However, the set of rules that qualify mental functioning has been a subject of considerable debate between the narrow vs. the broad theories of intelligence (Stanovich, 2009).

Every student can learn, no matter how intelligent. But some students struggle in school because of a weakness in one specific area of intelligence. These students often benefit from special education programs. There, they get extra help in the areas where they’re struggling. IQ tests can help teachers figure out which students would benefit from such extra help.IQ tests also can help identify students who would do well in fast-paced “gifted education” programs.

Reasoning questions like this one ask test-takers to figure out what would come next in the pattern.

Questions about important historical figures fall into the “knowledge” category of IQ tests. Knowledge-based questions test what a person knows about the world. For example, they might ask whether people know why it’s important to wash their hands before they eat.

Measuring Intelligence: Noteworthy Contributors

Sir Francis Galton

Sir Francis Galton was the first scientist who attempted to devise a modern test of intelligence in 1884. In his open laboratory, people could have the acuity of their vision and hearing measured, as well as their reaction times to different stimuli.

James McKeen Cattell

The world’s first mental test, created by James McKeen Cattell in 1890, consisted of similar tasks, almost all of them measuring the speed and accuracy of perception. It soon turned out, however, that such tasks cannot predict academic achievement; therefore, they are probably imperfect measures of anything we would call intelligence.

Alfred Binet

The first modern-day IQ test was created by Alfred Binet in 1905. Unlike Galton, he was not inspired by scientific inquiry. Rather, he had very practical implications in mind: to be able to identify children who cannot keep up with their peers in the educational system that had recently been made compulsory for all.
