Alcalá de Henares is located 22 miles north-east of the capital of Spain, Madrid. It makes the perfect daytrip from Madrid. In Alcalá (like locals say) you will experience from the best in literary heritage to the buzzing tapas scene. In this article, I highlight what to do, see and eat in Alcalá de Henares if you visit...
Best things to see while visiting Alcalá de Henares:
1) Cervantes House & Museum:
Alcalá is well-known for its famous literary genius, "Miguel de Cervantes" who was a Spanish writer and wrote the Spanish classic: Don Quijote. In the museum, you can discover the life of this well-known writer (Shakespeare of the Spanish culture) and the place where he grew up. The house takes back the visitors to 16-17th centuries. The house is full of artwork and furniture of that time.
2) University of Alcalá de Henares:
Alcala university was founded in 1293. The university was refurbished as the modern university in 1975. It attracts national and international students and makes Alcalá de Henares one of the sought after student towns in Spain. It is also popular for the "Annual Cervantes Prize" which is awarded for the outstanding achievements of distinguished writers in the Spanish language.
3) Cathedral of Alcalá de Henares:
The cathedral was built between 1497 to 1515, in Gothic style. In 1904, it was declared a national monument. During the Spanish Civil war, the church suffered damage and lost some of it´s treasures in a fire. The austere exterior can be misleading because it´s interior is elaborate and magnificent. It is worth entering and enjoying it from the inside too.
Best cuisine to taste while visiting Alcalá de Henares:
The most recommended eating experience in Alcalá is tapas. There is a wide variety of restaurants for every palate and pocket. However, in general, eating in Alcalá de Henares means devouring traditional dishes.
Some of the most popular cuisines in the city are duelos, alcalainas, and quebrantos (typical dishes from Alcalá from different types of meat, organs and eggs). Besides all these dishes, meat and fish dishes like roasted sea bass and lamb are also popular among locals and visitors alike.
For those with a seet too try "Salinas Pastry" located in a "Plaza de Cervantes" because in the past the Royal house was it´s loyal client.
For a quick tapas experience:
Indalo Tapas is the number one tapas eating and dining spot in Alcalá. It is situated in the center of Alcala, and just a few minutes away from the Plaza de Cervantes. It offers great seating area for the bar patrons. The restaurant gives classic tapas choices like calamares,Spanish omelette, and chorizo among dozens of options.
