Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem is an Arabic phrase, meaning I begin with the name of the Most Merciful, the Most Merciful. Bismillah is abbreviated. Of the 114 Surahs of the Holy Qur'an, the remaining 113 Surahs have been started with "Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem" except Surah Tawba. Besides, it is known from the hadith that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to say "Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem" before starting every work.
For this, all work should be started by saying Bismillah in the name of Allah. We have no power to do anything except the grace of God. We are alive only because of His grace and mercy. And to gain this grace, he gave a message, 'Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem'. In Tafsir-i-Ibn Abi Hatim, ‘Uthman bin Affan (ra) asked the Messenger of Allah (saw) about‘ Bismillah ’. He replied, "That is the name of Allah Ta'ala."
There is as much closeness between the big name of Allah and this Bismillah as there is between the black part of the hair and the white part. In Ibn Tafsir's commentary, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: A verse has been revealed to me which has not been revealed to any other Prophet except Hazrat Sulaiman. The verse is, ‘Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem’.
Hazrat Jabir (ra) narrates that when this verse was revealed, the rain stopped in the east, the atmosphere stopped, the waves calmed the sea, the animals shook their ears and drove away the devil, and the Lord of the Worlds swore by His honor and dignity. All work has to start with Bismillah. It is mustahab to say Bismillah at the beginning of work and speech. It has been narrated in the hadith that work which is not started by Bismillah is useless and unblessed. Starting with Bismillah, Allah has mercy on him, keeps him in custody and blesses him with deeds. By starting the action through this sentence, one can be free from the vainness of Satan. May Bismillah be the starting point of all work for all of us.
