The slap Oscars
April 4, 2022. No. 204
A week ago we saw at the Oscars 2022 awards gala, something that went around the world in just a few minutes. Without a doubt, it is a key moment in the history of live television. It turns out that Will Smith slapped host Chris Rock after Chris made a rude joke about Smith's wife.
Rock said “Jada, I love you, 'G.I. Jane 2' can't wait to see it”. Turns out Demi Moore's character in this 1997 movie had to shave her head. Smith's wife suffers from alopecia, a disease that makes you lose your hair, for which she has suffered a lot, since especially those who suffer from it, it affects their self-esteem above all.
Jada did not like the joke in the least and it shows on her face immediately. Then Smith gets up and without warning walks to the stage and decides to slap Chris in full gala live for the entire planet.
Chris takes it well enough, and continues with the routine. Smith then responded from his seat by shouting "keep my wife's name out of your f****** mouth" twice at the comedian.
There was a lot of speculation from the beginning if this whole situation was a montage. The first thing that must be taken into account is that violence is not justified by anything, although others have the opinion that verbal violence and its abuse is worse than physical violence. For all this, I don't think the academy would have allowed such an event. Despite all the instant publicity that the event and the promotion generated for the OSCARs, I don't think it's the most appropriate or beneficial thing for them. So I think the events were real in every way.
Will Smith won the Oscar for best actor for his performance in the movie: “King Richard”. Going up on stage to receive his award, he apologized, but the damage had already been done.
A few days ago Will Smith resigned from the Academy after stating that his actions at the Oscars "were offensive, painful and inexcusable." Here is the statement:
"My actions at the 94th Academy Awards were offensive, hurtful and inexcusable. The list of people I hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many friends and loved ones, everyone in attendance and the public. who watched from home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy. I deprived the other nominees and winners of the opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work. I am heartbroken."
The actor stated that he wants to "refocus the spotlight on those who deserve it for their achievements and allow the Academy to return to the incredible work it does to support creativity and artistry in film. For this reason, I am resigning as a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and will accept any other consequences that the Board deems appropriate" reads the end of his statement.
Minutes after the news was known, the Academy reported that it accepted the resignation and would continue with its disciplinary procedure.
What do you think? Is Will Smith's action justified?
If a man chooses violence to protect his wife's dignity, that is entirely on him. If anyone chooses violence over the myriad other ways to express dislike, that is entirely on them.
