Abigail was a beautiful and sensible woman.
Unfortunately, she married Nabal, a man who was very harsh, crude, mean, stingy and evil in all his doings. In spite of all these, Abigail was loyal to her husband and tried to keep him out of trouble.
When Nabal showed ingratitude to David who had help to protect his servants and sheep in the field and David decided to destroy all that belonged to him, it was the wife who went and pleased with him to turn away his anger. Abigail was an effective counselor.
Due to the fact that she could see the big picture, she kept David from taking revenge.(1st Samuel 25:1-42).
LESSONS FROM THE LIFE OF ABIGAIL
Singles should pray well and allow God to guide them to choose the right person to marry.
We should learn to see the big picture; that is seeing beyond now and the present situation.
We should use our God given wisdom and opportunities to promote peace.
We should not take sides with our spouse who is wrong in a conflict rather; we should seek reconciliation and peace.
We should strive to keep people from revenge or retaliation.
We should be sensible and understanding.
We should appreciate the gifts and virtues of our spouses and encourage them to put them into practice.
We should not despise the wise counsel of our spouse, children and those who are close to us.
Singles or widow and widowers who want to marry should cultivate Godly characters. It was the character of Abigail that made David to marry to her after the death of her husband.
Abigail was a very generous woman. We should learn to be generous. Stinginess is not part of Christ's character.
