Social media are internet based tools based for sharing information with others. It is a sort of online communication. It includes numerous websites and various social networking sites on the internet. There are hundreds of such networking sites connecting people around the world. It is impossible to discuss all of these networking sites individually in this limited article and there is no need to do so . We mention just a few of them and tell the overall uses and abuses of the social media . Today, the well known social networking sites are : Facebook, You tube, Twitter, What's app, Instagram, Skype, Viber, imo, Google+,etc.
The internet has become an effective platform to establish two way communication and financial online trade, knowledge sharing and social interaction.
Today we are flooded with information.we need a great deal of time to go through such a large portion of data . It is simply confusing to decide what to read. The social media has not yet invested any such tool as may help us detect the data worthy of reading . Other such things of joy and fun. Media educates masses massively . The newspaper educate the people through features, articles and columns. Radio and TV put on air various valuable program , debates and discussions about political crisis , cultural activities , educational system and social problems. Several programmes about various discipline and broadcast for the guidance of the students of far flung areas. In the present era, media is playing a viral role in educating the peasants about agriculture. It imparts detailed information about recent researches regarding the preparation of land for various crops , irrigation , pesticides , herbicides , harvesting and marketing . Thus the peasants get in depth knowledge and technical support about farming industry ,dairy products ,amd cultivation . They learn superb skills in breeding animals , nurturing plants and rearing birds . Then , media provides the businessmen with the latest news about costs , output and market prices of various goods . It assesses and reviews the market forces . It divulges the actual situation of money market and stock market. It also makes various suggestions for the uplift of business and trade.
But we cannot turn a blind eye to the grim aspect of media. Some selfish people manipulate media to feather their own nests . Such black sheep blemish the beautiful bearing of journalism .
About such journalist Arnold Bennett,a British writer says in his book ' The Title': " journalist say a thing say a thing that they know is not true , in the hope that if they keep on saying it long enough it will be true". Thus media has a miraculous power to form public opinion either in favour of a matter or against it. Sometime media publishes or broadcast shocking stories just to create thrill and excitement.
