Jasim Uddin (1 January 1903 - 14 March 1986) was a Bengali poet, lyricist, novelist and writer. Awarded the title of 'Pallikabi', Jasim Uddin is the first full-fledged modern poet to nurture the cultural heritage of the abominable Bengal. [1] [3] His poems have been translated into many languages. [4] [5]
Educated at Calcutta University, Jasim Uddin taught at Dhaka University for 5 years; [4] he left teaching in 1944 to join the Bengal Provincial Government and later the East Pakistan Government's Publicity Department and retired in 1962. Jasim Uddin was a progressive and non-sectarian and a staunch supporter of socialist society. [4] He was one of the pioneers of the cultural movement in East Pakistan. [4]
Jasim Uddin was awarded the President's Pride of Performance Award (1958), the Government of Bangladesh's Ekushey Padak (198) and the Swadhinata Puraskar (posthumously, 198). [4] He declined the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1974. [4]
