In the 16-18 century, Russian peasants had a very difficult life. Women gave birth to many children, so that there was a chance that at least one of the children would survive. The infant mortality rate was very high. Basically, children were dying from diseases and infections. But there were also accidents.

Sometimes it happened that a woman, exhausted by work, fell on the child in her sleep, and crushed him with her weight. The peasant women slept so deeply that they did not wake up even when the child was suffocating from the weight of their body. In the morning such a child could no longer breathe, he was dead.

After the funeral, the spirit of the deceased baby appeared in the house. Such spirits in the old days in Russia were called yogosha.

Igosha appeared at night in the form of a baby, who lacked arms and legs. This scared the peasants very much. The spirit was angry, it could make noise and turn things over. The peasants tried to calm the evil spirit. They left milk and bread for the yogosh in the corner. The mother and father of the deceased baby prayed all their lives for the peace of the soul of their child.
