MATCHBOX Mechanism

The matchbox we use at home has a rough surface of brown on both sides of the box. The fire ignited when the match stick was rubbed. There are actually several chemical reactions that are organized here.

There are basically three elements needed to start a fire - heat, oxygen and fuel.

The brown coating on either side of the matchbox is essentially red phosphorus. It is one of the two main allotropes of phosphorus. Mention of another is coming soon. This is the main reason why this color can be seen on the surface. This red phosphorus is coated with a mixture of fine glass powder to increase friction.

Some heat is generated when a stick is rubbed on that surface. In this heat the structure of red phosphorus is broken down and another form of phosphorus is converted into white phosphorus. White phosphorus is a very active element. As it reacts with the oxygen in the air as it is generated, it generates more heat and fire starts.

The head of the matchstick contains several compounds. One is potassium chlorate (KClO3). The heat generated by the reaction of oxygen with white phosphorus breaks it down and produces a lot of oxygen which provides oxygen to ignite the fire.

KClO3⟶KCl + O2

But this fire is fleeting. It cannot immediately catch fire on a piece of wood. Needs some time. A second compound is used to hold this fire for a while - Antimony Tri Sulfide (Sb2S3)

It burns in oxygen to form sulfur dioxide. This compound is responsible for the golden color of the match.

Some time is found in this combustion. At that time the stick caught fire. But this is not the end. The stick is coated with wax so that the fire can burn in a controlled manner.

Once the wood is burnt, it is soaked in ammonium phosphate ((NH4) 3PO4) during preparation so that it does not burn as long as coal, which suppresses the residual heat of combustion.

The compounds are painted in different colors to enhance the beauty and for easy detection, and lastly the compounds are glued to the top of the stick.

KClO3⟶KCl+O2
