The Social Nature of Man

The nature of the human body points to physical distinction and suggests individualism, but having a functional body is hardly an adequate description. Intelligence and attitudes of love, hatred, selfishness and concern are very much parts of a person's total beings.

To Illustrate this truth, consider a hypothetical example: A child grows up in total isolation from other human beings; his body may grow with sufficient food available, but his mind and emotional life will not develop. He will be unable to talk because of never having heard others speak. His intelligence will be hindered because of lack of teaching by others. He will not know how to relate to another person. He will be a strange creature indeed and hardly what one could call a human being.

The preceding hypothetical illustration emphasizes that humanity was designed for societal relationships. There are various levels of these relationships, but the most intimate are experienced within the home: Husband-wife and parent-children. The right kind of homes are required for the development of healthy personalities. The highest fulfillment of the humanity comes through the joining together with one's counterpart in the home.
