After God clothed man..
Genesis 3:22-24 [22]Then the lord God said, “Look, the human beings have become like us, knowing both good and evil. What if they reach out, take fruit from the tree of life, and eat it? Then they will live forever!” [23]So the lord God banished them from the Garden of Eden, and he sent Adam out to cultivate the ground from which he had been made. [24]After sending them out, the lord God stationed mighty cherubim to the east of the Garden of Eden. And he placed a flaming sword that flashed back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
Since man are now sinners, God did not allow them to eat the fruit of the tree of life and live forever because God's plan was for man to live as holy and righteous people, in His likeness and in oneness with Him....not independent sinners.
After Adam and Eve ate the forbidden fruit, they knew good and evil on their own. This corrupted their innocence. The fatal combination of FREEWILL and their OWN KNOWLEDGE of good and evil apart from God made them independent-minded. INDEPENDENCE causes SEPARATION. Mankind are now spiritually separated from God, the source of life. This is called spiritual death. Now, whether they like it or not, their independent knowledge of good and evil, when combined with their freewill, will make them think, act and live independent from God's will and commandments. This nature will make them sin continually against God. This is called SIN nature.
SIN ruined man's fellowship and relationship with God. They were driven out as Satan was and they could no longer live with the Holy God in the garden because they are now sinners. They do not belong to God's family and kingdom anymore. Man became relationally separated from God. This is RELATIONAL DEATH.
Man cannot return to the garden and eat the fruit of the tree of life that they may live forever. Man has lost their opportunity to have everlasting life. Their bodies had already started dying by growing old. They would waste away until man, being a spiritual being or soul, can no longer use his body and is forced to separate from it. The separation of the soul or of the immaterial spiritual man from his earthly body is called PHYSICAL DEATH. Man ceases to be a living being in the material world but exists in the spiritual world (or the world of the dead).
Adam and Eve's sin resulted to DEATH and the corruption of their innocent and pure nature. The problem of death and spiritual uncleanliness because of sin is not only evil works and separation from God while man lives on earth, but when man separates from his wornout flesh body and dies, where will he live in his spiritual existence for he does not cease to exist after physical death? This too, is our problem.
