When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord God appeared again to Abram and reconfirmed that He will soon fulfill His promise. God does not want Abram to doubt. God wanted Abram to walk with him and not listen to Satan so Abram will not lose faith and will receive God's promise. God said:
Genesis 17:5
5] No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.
God changed Abram's name to Abraham , a sign that a divine decision or covenant has already been made to make him a father of many nations. God's decision is final and nothing can change it. Sarai was wrong in thinking that God's promise to her husband will be fulfilled though Hagar.
CIRCUMCISION, sign of God's COVENANT
Then God said to Abraham:
Genesis 17:11
11] You are to undergo circumcision, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and you.
God required circumcision for Abraham and all his male descendants as a physical sign or mark of God's covenant with Abraham. Every day Abraham and his descendants would see their circumcision and it would remind them of God's promises or covenant.
Abraham recieved God's pledge and sign of God's covenant not because he fulfilled certain laws or performed certain rituals, but because he believed and had faith in God and His promises. But any male who remained uncircumcised had shown to God that he had no faith, did not believe or had chosen not to value God's covenant or promises with Abraham. Because of one's unbelief and lack of faith, God will cut him off from God's people.
