How old is the house we have found so far?
Two million years old!
Yes, the cave in the pictures below is home to two million year old humans. The 140-meter-long Wonderwerk Cave in South Africa was not known to modern humans until the 20th century, but was re-discovered around 1940. Then we found out that this cave had been the abode of our ancestors for two million years.
For the past two million years, the cave has been home to humans of all ages.
But!
How do we know this cave is so old?
The magnetic properties of clay on all rocks are preserved. And the Earth's magnetic poles are reversed every 500,000 years. So when we used this knowledge to study the rocks of this cave and the layer of clay on them, we realized that this cave can be up to two million years old.
What else have we got from this cave?
From here we have found the axes that were made of stone and man used to wield them by hand. In addition, we have found evidence of a million-year-old fire inside the cave.
This cave has been the abode of modern human ancestors for the last two million years. Although we have not found human skeletons here, we have certainly found evidence from this cave that testifies to the existence of human beings here. By the time the cave became a human habitation, humans had just begun to walk on two legs. Remember that humans started walking on two legs forty to forty-four million years ago today. In terms of evolution, this period was quite recent.
