Frank Herbert, the lion, the man and the moving van
When we were 14 and books were still a thing, the most traded authors were Alexandre Dumas, Jules Verne and Frank Herbert. Having a complete collection, or most of the books from one of these authors, you were more famous in town than the guys who pretend to buy a Lambo today, renting it instead for a week or two. I am talking about the 80s and 90s, a long time ago when the mobile phone was only a 1kg brick gimmick that some guy bought to impress women. Keep in mind that the first iPhone will be not launched until 2007.
So, as I try to remember, the full collection was the following:
Dune
Dune Messiah
Children of Dune
God Emperor of Dune
Heretics of Dune
Chapterhouse: Dune
House Atreides
House Harkonnen
House Corrino
Dune: The Butlerian Jihad
Dune: The Machine Crusade
Dune: The Battle of Corrin
Hunters of Dune
Sandworms of Dune
Paul of Dune
Winds of Dune
Sisterhood of Dune
Mentats of Dune
Navigators of Dune
Dune: The Duke of Caladan
Dune: The Lady of Caladan
Dune: The Heir of Caladan
Dune: Princess of Dune
Sands of Dune
Dune: The Graphic Novel Part I
Dune: The Graphic Novel Part II - Muab'dib
They are quite a few, as you see, and the richest kids on the block used to have 6-8 of them. Of course, some may be quite recently published, yet, the idea remains. I am an adult, and it has been so long since I read them last time. I almost forgot about it, as reading the borrowed ones implied waiting quite a long queue, the town library was our secret weapon. They got more than one copy, and then at least one of each book, and even then, we needed to be quite lucky to find some. Oh, the memories.
As you can imagine, I was quite happy to see a new movie made, given how much the science of the cinema advanced since the previous book adaptation. The year 2000 mini-series was a bit of a failure, with all of its three episodes. A bit too cartoonish. The 1984 ones, do not even start to tell me, despite being nominated for the Oscars, and getting a Hugo Award and a Jupiter Award. Well, for that time, was good enough. But this time, we expected much more. And boy, oh, boy, we were not disappointed. I am not commenting about this from the perspective of a 20-year-old, whose knowledge is based on the last three Star Wars movies (yeah, they do suck mostly), but from the point of view of somebody who read most of the books. The movie is good, and while they ignored some problematic issues because of too much money needed to add them to the movie, the first one was decent, and the second even better. Shall as just say, as a fun fact, that the first two movies are based just on the first book? Plenty to come, yet, the following ones may need serious CGI to raise the bar. The emperor god of Dune, some immortal man-grandfather-sandworm hybrid. If you get this right, the rest will be easy. Navigators? Mentats? Bene Tleilax? Boy, this would be so cool. If they get it right.
This is all that I can say without any spoilers. Go to the movie and tell me what you think about it. This is all for today, as the #marchinleo theme was quite fun for the day.
All the best,
George
