Morality And Foreign Policy:

Foreign policy is the tool via which states communicates with each other. The chief purpose of the foreign policy is to serve the national interest of the state. All states try to safeguard their national interests in the best way. Foreign policy tests the acumen of the leaders of the day that they fight against the counter tides and protect national interests under various circumstances.

Morality, according to some realist, does not matter in International Relations. IR is an anarchic realm; there is no world government that maintains orders. That’s why leaders do what they deem fit for their states. When the survival of the state is at stake then ends justify means. Ethics won’t work when the very survival is in danger and there is no meaningful choice at hand. Clearly, at that moment, many philosophers say, “ought to imply can”. no one will fault you for not doing imposable. For instance, for Pakistan, it’s not possible to go to war with India because its existence would be at stake if she goes to war with India. Pakistan can’t criticize China’s atrocities against UGHORS due do economic and many other obligations. The American administration has been trying to “use coronavirus outbreak” as a tool to dismantle the Chines government because it believes that it is good for his country to destabilize china although unethical.

Keeping in mind the aforementioned view It would be a myopic approach to mix foreign policy decisions with morality. Moreover, Leaders' policies will be seen through the lens of practicality, not morality. The policy of the leader will be seen whether It would have worked, not whether it is moral or not. Rulers around the world define good as what is good for their state. Morals are irrelevant. Imran Khan will criticize human right violation in China because he feels that it’s not in the best interest of Pakistan even though it's morally wrong.

Despite the above-mentioned facts, this approach oversimplifies issues but it’s every time. Some issues are important to nation-states most don’t. The absence of the world government doesn’t mean the absence of world order at all. Realistically, no state can survive in isolation no matter how its economic potentials are. Every state has some economic obligations, some security constraints. Three dimensional morally good foreign policies are those which weigh and balance intentions, consequences, and means.

In nutshell, it would be safe to say it would be completely meaningless to say that morality has no value in foreign policy. It plays a very crucial rule. Only senseless will undermine its impotence.

That's really one of a kind article I saw here, very well done @Gulbano. I agree that Pakistan can't afford the war nor India. Foreign policies are should be made keeping morality in mind. Anyway nice article. Politicians won't listen to us until next election 😅
